What I think I know is where my true knowledge ends, because true knowledge is Christ. Notice I didn’t say that true knowledge is about Christ or even in Christ. True knowledge is Christ. Sure, I might gather information or even facts to know, but to know apart from Christ is to kill true Knowledge. Knowledge is Christ and to know apart from Christ is death! To know is to know Him. There is no true knowledge in this world apart from Jesus. And the place where I stake a claim in “my knowledge” is the place I cease to know. Almost everything that I know apart from Christ is actually opinion, and as I have stated in my recent posts, opinions are death.”
You might say, “What about faith, isn’t that knowledge?” Well, Faith is a Person. I don’t adhere to truths; I affix myself to Jesus. He is the Way, the Truth and the Life, not my opinions or even what I know about Him. Our fall in the Garden was the result of opinions.
The Garden: Knowledge is Christ
In the Garden, we chose knowledge over the Father. I left my relationship with Him to relate to what I could know about myself and my world. My opinions became my god. No longer was I walking with God; I was walking with what I thought I knew, separated from God. Knowledge is Christ, and any knowing apart from Christ is separation from Christ. I might have knowledge about Christ, but even this is futile apart from Christ Himself. All knowing is Christ or it is just opinions separating us from Him.
I have put great stock in knowing. I’ve sought knowledge with fervent passion. And when I found what I thought was knowledge, I tried to express it using many words. I thought if I expressed those thoughts with many words, it not only helped people understand my knowledge but also made me appear more knowledgeable. What I have learned since is that if we can say in three words what we took three sentences to convey, we’ve done a disservice to our reader. And here’s the kicker: even if I pare those three sentences down to three words, if those words exist apart from Christ, they will communicate the same death as if they were those original three sentences.
Our Knowledge is Christ
Knowledge is Christ or what we know is death. Jesus doesn’t reward knowing apart from knowing Him. All knowing is separation apart from Him – even what we know about Him. All opinions garnered from what I think I know sever me from Christ.
Opinions are bondage. We are committed to our opinions, which are formed from what we think we know. We make life decisions based on our exalted knowledge of ourselves and others, but knowledge is Christ or it is death. He has to be my knowing. When I deduce my knowledge and opinions apart from Him, I wall myself in with those opinions. I become a prisoner to that knowledge. I have never ever met an opinionated person who wasn’t controlled and imprisoned by their opinions. They are never happy because they are separated from God. What I have found is they’re manic to prove they are not separated from God and are driven to fix the world with their opinions. Opinions are bondage!
Consequences for Knowing Apart From Christ
You might think that I am taking this too far, but if you look at our Garden consequences – from choosing knowledge apart from Christ to Christ Himself – you will see how dire this really is. Everything I know must be Christ. All my knowledge must come from Christ. I wish everything that I said or thought was Christ, but He and I are still working on it. This is my commitment to making that a reality, and in my next post I’ll show how we can live a life where our knowledge is Christ.
For it is in Him, and in Him alone, that men will find all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
Colossians 2:3 Phillips
“that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ . . . may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which He has called you, what are the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His great might. . . ” — knowledge belonging to the Spirit, given by the Spirit, not acquired by our own reasoning, striving or… Read more »
Oh John now I know why I haven’t have the grace to read my scripture cards. When I would read them it didn’t feel part of Him and now I know why. I asked God this morning why and here you are showing me the way.
Oh how easy we make things into law, the knowledge and not about a relationship. Thank you Holy Spirit!
