The Shame of You Will Be Like God

Print

“For God knows that in the day you eat of it, your eyes will be opened and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” When the woman saw that the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eyes, and that it was desirable for obtaining wisdom, she took the fruit and ate it. She also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate it. And the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; so they sewed together fig leaves and made coverings for themselves.…
Genesis 3:5-7

LIKE GOD

LIKE GOD
There is a shame that comes from trying to be like God without God. We become ashamed, and rightly so, when we attempt to be like God, without God. This is exactly what happened in the Garden when Eve listened to the serpent. He in essences said, “You don’t need God to be God’s, you can be like God by simply disobeying His harsh rules and regulations and eating from the Tree of Good and Evil.” Eve bought it hook line and sinker, and so would’ve I.

“God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like God, knowing both good and evil.”
Genesis 3:5 NLT

Mankind started out with NO shame. “And the man and his wife were both naked, and they were not ashamed.” (Genesis 2:25) Adam and Eve didn’t have negative self awareness, they lived in the love of God and His view of them. They were fully clothed with God’s knowledge not their own. This was beautiful! They were beautiful until they traded God’s thoughts for another’s.

Shame Full Thinking

Shame Full Thinking
There is a shame that ensues after we try to manufacture godliness and take power. In actuality this is a healthy shame. It is the shame of thinking apart from God. Anytime we think in opposition to God we should feel shame. Powering through is shameless. Negative shame is when we become ashamed of who we are, it discounts our person. Positive shame is being ashamed for what we are thinking. There is a deep difference. One is the Spirit using our conscience to bring about course correction, the other is discounting ourselves as God’s creation.

So there is a positive side of shame, and the proof of this is found in the word shameless. Being shameless is a negative, meaning there is a positive shame. Living willfully and without any shame means you are living in rebellion. You’re a loose canon! This is a shame-worthy position. Living shamelessly is a recipe for destruction, when we are walking a path counter to our God and our creation. When I go outside of the realm of God’s definition of my reality, I will enter the shame of defining what I think by how I feel. Shame is the product of not going to God for His definition of our circumstances. But if this shame is a check on my heart to correct with conviction, it is positive.

“There is a shame that comes from trying to be like God without God.” Such piercing words…His sword flashing… God is God. That He calls to me in my shame of nakedness is heart wrenching…on my face before my God to hear Him, see Him, know Him, TURN. Held to HIM. Underneath positive shame there can be no excuse, no ‘explanation’…all expectation is in Christ. It’s so beyond ‘good & evil’, it’s heart-freeing relationship. I love the way you put it, John, “They lived in the love of God & His view of them. They were fully clothed with God’s… Read more »
