They Seek a Sign, GIVE US A SIGN

Why do so many of us get caught in the deception of the Kundalini spirit? What is it in us? Is it just this current generation that is so susceptible? Nope, it’s not a new dilemma. This problem has been going on for a long time. There’s a part of all of us that looks for miracles. We seek a sign. And even Christ faced this in His confrontation of the Pharisees. They came to Him demanding, “GIVE US A SIGN…TO PROVE YOURSELF!”

The Sign of Jonah

Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to Him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from You.” He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now something greater than Jonah is here.

You see, our fascination with signs and wonders is neither new nor uncommon. As I stated in my last post, it is natural and can be God-inspired. God gives us desires and yearnings of the heart to experience Him. We are intended to desire relational intimacy and supernatural experiences with God, but too often we simply won’t invest the time and prayer to see this manifest. This is where we are most susceptible to swallowing the deception: in our unwillingness to wait.

Seek a Sign

There are whole ministries that focus on and seek a sign. But are they looking for a sign or the Sign Maker? Our hearts are revealed by what we focus upon. It all has a lot to do with our heart condition.

Jesus refused these Pharisees because their heart motive was wrong. They were looking for proof to condemn, not a sign to celebrate. How do I know this? Because of His curt response. Even if the Pharisees were given a miraculous sign, they wouldn’t have believed in Him. They were NOT looking for a sign to bolster belief; they were looking for a sign to tear it down.

So in this confrontation, why did Jesus mention the miraculous sign of Jonah when He answered the Pharisees? What was Jesus trying to establish by referencing the sign of Jonah? My next post will look the astonishing reason why the sign of Jonah was mentioned in this exchange.
